David is a former math teacher and homeless chaplain. His interest in martial arts started in high school where he fell in love with judo. In 2019 he started teaching self-defense, initially focusing on physical techniques. His approach quickly changed when in 2020 he was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. Having a disability has made him realize that preventing violence before it happens is the only reliable option for self-defense, because your ability to defend yourself physically can be taken away without notice. Since then he has worked with Minneapolis Public Schools, SD School of Mines, Catholic Social Services, LMAS District Health, and the YMCA.
